We visited the base of December 14. It is easy to reach
on XC skis, but we took the shuttle.
The shuttles are vans with large balloon tires, used
for transportation around McMurdo and to and from
the airfield. The shuttle drivers work 12 hour shifts,
two days off, each week.
They always wave when passing each other.
The airfield has recently moved, incidentally, from
the ice directly in front of McMurdo,
to Williams field, about 13 km further inland, as the
ice softens and thins.
Scott Base is located at the bottom of a hill, right on the ice edge.
