Student Probability Seminar

Dynamics on Dilation Surfaces

Speaker: Mason Haberle, Courant (NYU)

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 517

Date: Tuesday, November 1, 2022, 1 p.m.

Synopsis:

We will recall the dynamics of flows on the torus, and introduce the more general framework of translation surfaces. The global ergodic theory of translation surfaces is a well understood tool for attacking dynamical questions such as rational billiards and illumination problems. We will then move to the poorly-understood story of dilation surfaces, where exotic behaviors and fractal geometries pop up.
