Calculus Prerequisites and Advanced Placement
Here are the prerequisites and placement policies for calculus courses. For more information about the courses, please consult our Course Descriptions page.
STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ENROLL IN CALCULUS I, MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITES:Prerequisites for students who matriculated to NYU Fall 2012 or Later
- SAT score of 650 or higher on mathematics portion
- SAT subject test in mathematics (Level 1 or Level 2) score of 650 or greater
- ACT/ACTE Math score of 30 or higher
- AB score of 3 or higher
- BC score of 3 or higher
- A-Level Maths score of C or higher (anyone who took Further Maths should contact the math department as it varies depending on the exam board)
- AS-Level Maths score of B or higher
- IB HL score of 5 or higher
- IB SL score of 6 or higher
- Completion of NYU's Algebra and Calculus (MATH-UA 009) with a grade of C or higher
- Placement Test
Prerequisites for students who matriculated to NYU Before Fall 2012
- SAT score of 750 or higher on mathematics portion
- ACT/ACTE Math score of 34 or higher
- AB score of 4 or higher
- BC score of 3 or higher
- Completion of Algebra and Calculus (MATH-UA 009) with a grade of C or higher
- Placement Test
Prerequisites for students who matriculated to NYU Fall 2012 or Later
- MATH-UA 121 Calculus I with a C or better
- AB score of 4 or higher
- BC score of 4 or higher
- A-level Maths score of B or higher (anyone who took Further Maths should contact the math department as it varies depending on the exam board)
- IB HL score of 6 or higher
- Placement Test
- MATH-UA 121 Calculus I with a C or better
- BC score of 4 or higher
- Placement Test
Prerequisites for students who matriculated to NYU Fall 2012 or later
- MATH-UA 122 Calculus II with a C or higher
- BC score of 5
- GCE A-Level H-2 Version with an A or B
- IB HL with series score of 6 or higher with Topic 9
- Placement Test

2014-2016 Guide to Advanced Placement Credit
Students who receive a 4 or better on the AB test will receive 4 points of credit for Calculus I, MATH-UA 121. Students who receive a 4 on the BC will receive 4 points of credit for Calculus I, MATH-UA 121; those who received a 5 on the BC will receive 8 point of credit for Calculus I, MATH-UA 121, and Calculus II, MATH-UA 122. Please note, all students who wish to take Calculus III must receive a C or better in Calculus II or take a placement exam.**These guidelines are for students enrolled in CAS. For all other schools please check with your advisor.
