A Distillation of the Mechanism of the Madden-Julian Oscillation

Speaker: Geoff Vallis, Exeter

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1302

Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2022, 3:30 p.m.

Synopsis:

he Madden-Julian oscillation is a large-scale precipitating disturbance centered around the equator that propagates eastward at about 5 m/s, repeating  every 40 days or so.  Numerical models have had mixed success in reproducing it and understanding the mechanism has proven elusive. In this talk I will use some simple numerical and semi-analytic models to reduce the mechanism to an essence.
