Mostly Biomathematics Lunchtime Seminar

Neural computation of color

Speaker: Robert Shapley, NYU

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314

Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2026, 12:45 p.m.

Synopsis:

Color appearance is not only cone activations and subtractive comparisons of cone signals; it depends on spatial color contrast. There are two different populations of color-responsive neurons in visual cortex: Single-Opponent and Double- Opponent cells. Double-Opponent cells act like color-spatial filters that can account for spatial color contrast. We will see how Double-Opponent cells work by studying their responses to spatial patterns of color and also how they combine signals about color and brightness.
