Modeling and Simulation Group Meeting

Intersection-free contact dynamics

Speaker: Zachary Ferguson, Courant (CS)

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 517

Date: Thursday, December 9, 2021, 12:30 p.m.

Synopsis:

Contacts play an important role in many physical phenomena. Because of this, the study of contacts has a deep wealth of knowledge. Surprisingly, however, simulating contacts is a challenge with many parameters to carefully adjust. Incorrect parameters can result in numerical explosions, intersections, and other failures. We seek to address these problems by developing robust methods that can handle arbitrary scenarios with guaranteed success.

In this talk, I will be present our original paper "Incremental Potential Contact: Intersection- and Inversion-free Large Deformation Dynamics" which focuses on finite element simulation of elasticity with contacts, and our recent follow-up work "Intersection-free Rigid Body Dynamics." I will also discuss future challenges and goals (e.g., extending IPC to curved geometry/higher-order basis functions).
