Synopsis:

The central limit theorem for linear statistics of Haar distributed random unitary matrices is a fundamental result in random matrix theory, and it has many different proofs. I will discuss some ongoing joint work with Gaultier Lambert (KTH Stockholm/SISSA Trieste) concerning an interpretation of this result from the point of view of bosonization, which is an interesting phenomenon occurring in 1+1 dimensional quantum field theory. Time permitting, I will also discuss a dynamical variant of this interpretation and speculate on extensions to other random matrix models.
