An Introduction to the Method of Reflections

Speaker: Amandin Chyba Rabeendran, NYU Courant

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 201

Date: Monday, May 11, 2026, 12:30 p.m.

Synopsis:

The method of reflections is an iterative procedure that solves a multi-object boundary value problem by repeatedly solving simpler one-object problems. In this talk we cover the history of the method of reflections to solve electrostatic and fluid mechanics problems. We then derive its modern formulation and provide intuition through a one-dimensional example. Finally we present a proof of its convergence in the case of the one-dimensional Laplace problem with 3 bodies.
