Student Probability Seminar
Overcrowding Estimates for the Coulomb Gas
Speaker: Eric Thoma, CIMS
Location: Warren Weaver Hall 517
Date: Tuesday, December 6, 2022, 5:40 p.m.
Synopsis:
The Coulomb gas is an important model of statistical physics appearing in a variety of contexts. This talk will introduce the gas and a new method for proving several interesting estimates using some simple properties of the Coulomb force. I will address questions involving extremes of the inter-particle gaps, limits on crystallization in the gas, and fluctuations of electric charge. The talk will assume no prior exposure to the model.
