Jalal Shatah, Silver Professor of Mathematics, has received the 2025 Kuwait Prize in Basic Sciences. The prize was established by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) to honor distinguished Kuwaiti and Arab scientists worldwide. Professor Shatah was awarded for his contributions to Mathematical Science within the Basic Sciences category, which recognizes individuals for their outstanding lifetime research achievements. The prize ceremony will be held in Kuwait City this upcoming December.
Professor Shatah joined Courant as a postdoctoral research in 1983, becoming a Professor of Mathematics in 1993. His research focuses on the problem of global existence and asymptotic behavior of small solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic and dispersive equations. Professor Shatah is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of a Sloan Research Fellowship, a Presidential Young Investigator Award, and numerous National Science Foundation grants. He is Chair of the Organizing Committee of the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians, which will take place in Philadelphia next month.
