Storm Track Impacts and Predictability

Synopsis:

Extratropical cyclones give rise to much of the high impact weather over mid-latitude regions including most of the continental US and Europe. The aggregate of cyclone tracks are called the storm tracks. In this talk, I will discuss some of our recent effort in quantifying how storm track variations can impact weather and extremes. Given that storm tracks have significant impacts on the regional weather and climate, we would also like to explore whether storm track variability is predictable, and what the physical mechanisms behind storm track predictability are. Two examples linked to tropical heating - ENSO and MJO - will be discussed.
