CAS Calculus Information
Below are the prerequisites and placement policies for calculus courses. For more information about the courses, please refer to our undergraduate course descriptions.
ACT and SAT scores must be submitted to NYU and posted in your academic records in order to satisfy the prerequisite. We do not accept screenshots of ACT or SAT scores.
STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ENROLL IN MATH-UA 121 CALCULUS I, MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITES:
- SAT score of 670 or higher on mathematics portion March 2016 to today
- SAT score of 650 or higher on mathematics portion before March 2016 (2016, 2015, 2014, etc.)
- ACT/ACTE Math score of 30 or higher
- AB score of 3 or higher
- BC score of 3 or higher
- A-Level Maths score of C or higher (anyone who took Further Maths should contact the math department as it varies depending on the exam board)
- AS-Level Maths score of B or higher
- Completion of NYU's Algebra, Trigonometry, and Functions (MATH-UA 009) with a grade of C or higher
- Placement Test
IB Prerequisites for MATH-UA 121 Calculus I 2021 - 2027
- IB Analysis and Approaches HL score of 5
- IB Applications and Interpretations HL score of 5
- IB Analysis and Approaches SL score of 7
IB Prerequisites for MATH-UA 121 Calculus I 2014 - 2020
- IB Mathematics HL score of 5
- IB Mathematics SL score of 6 or higher
- IB Mathematical Studies SL score of 7
STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ENROLL IN MATH-UA 122 CALCULUS II, MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITES:
- MATH-UA 121 Calculus I with a C or better
- AB score of 4 or higher
- BC score of 4 or higher
- A-level Maths score of B or higher (anyone who took Further Maths should contact the math department as it varies depending on the exam board)
IB Prerequisites for MATH-UA 122 Calculus II 2021 - 2027
- IB Analysis and Approaches HL score of 6
- IB Applications and Interpretations HL score of 6
IB Prerequisites for MATH-UA 122 Calculus II 2014 - 2020
- IB Mathematics HL score of 6 or higher (no Topic 9)
STUDENTS WHO WISH TO ENROLL IN MATH-UA 123 CALCULUS III, MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITES:
- MATH-UA 122 Calculus II with a C or higher
- BC score of 5
- SEAB A-Level H-2 score of B or higher
- Certain A-Level Further Maths Exams with score of B or higher (anyone who took Further Maths should contact the math department as it varies depending on the exam board)
IB Prerequisites for MATH-UA 123 Calculus III 2021 - 2027
- IB Analysis and Approaches HL score of 7
IB Prerequisites for MATH-UA 123 Calculus III 2014 - 2020
- IB Mathematics HL score of 6 or higher (with Topic 9)
- IB Further Mathematics HL score of 6 or higher
CAS Bulletin Guide to Advanced Placement Credit
Students who receive a 4 or better on the AB test will receive 4 points of credit for MATH-UA 121 Calculus I. Students who receive a 4 on the BC will receive 4 points of credit for MATH-UA 121 Calculus I; those who received a 5 on the BC will receive 8 point of credit for MATH-UA 121 Calculus I and MATH-UA 122 Calculus II.
If you received AP credits for a calculus course, and you register for the same course, you will forfeit your AP credits.
