On tangencies among planar curves

Synopsis:

What is the maximum possible number of tangencies among n planar curves as a function of n?

We will consider several restrictions under which this number becomes sub-quadratic, and in some cases even linear. In particular, we will discuss tangencies among (pairwise intersecting) x-monotone curves, pseudo-segments, and pseudo-circles.
