Modeling and Simulation Group Meeting
AML Fest: Extraordinary math and physics of ordinary devices , Part II
Speaker: Tiffany Li, and Leif Ristroph (for Ariel Zhu), Courant
Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1302
Date: Thursday, April 28, 2022, 12:30 p.m.
Synopsis:
In this two-week MSG event, we’ll present some studies from the Applied Math Lab into the mechanics and fluid mechanics of everyday devices and toys. The projects originated from special topics graduate courses involving the AML, and all involve modeling and simulations developed closely with experiments. The presentations will aim to show the “serious fun” of looking for the deeper math and physics behind seemingly simple gadgets and familiar playthings.
April 21 -- Moving fluids: Drinking straws (Olivia Pomerenk) & siphons (Leif Ristroph for Kaizhe Wang)
April 28 -- Levitating toys: Paper airplanes (Tiffany Li) & hula hoops (Leif Ristroph for Ariel Zhu)
