Modeling and Simulation Group Meeting

Mixed Finite Elements: Forms, Chains, Sequences and Tunnels

Speaker: Tobias Blickhan, NYU

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 517

Date: Thursday, April 2, 2026, 12:30 p.m.

Synopsis:

I will give a short overview over mixed structure-preserving finite element methods (the Finite Element Exterior Calculus framework) and their use in computational electrodynamics. Much of the results in this field can be understood in the framework of differential forms and complexes. Without diving too deep into the theory, we will see how these results can help us in constructing stable and well-posed discrete problems on non-contractible domains. We will encounter some very interesting connections between exterior calculus, numerical analysis, and algebraic topology.
