Why are people looking at tubes to study the wave equation?

Synopsis:

You've probably heard by now that the Kakeya conjecture got resolved in 3 dimensions. In this talk I'll try to motivate the reasons for why this problem is more than a mere curiosity by connecting it to local smoothing for wave equations via a chain of conjectures.
