NYU Courant at ICM 2026
Jalal Shatah, Silver Professor of Mathematics, has been named Chair of the ICM 2026 Organizing Committee for the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania next summer. Professor Shatah will lead preparations for the conference—which is being hosted by the U.S. for the first time in forty years—while an international committee selects the scientific program. Courant faculty members Scott Armstrong, Jinyoung Park, Valentino Tosatti, Hong Wang, Laure Zanna, and Nina Holden have been invited to speak by that committee; you can find the full lineup here.
Formed in Zurich in 1897, the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is the world's largest gathering of mathematicians, held every four years under the leadership of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The Fields Medals, the IMU Abacus Medal (formerly the Nevanlinna Prize), the Gauss Prize, and the Chern Medal are awarded during the congress's opening ceremony. Next year's congress will take place from July 23-30.
