Synopsis:

We describe an approach to showing that unstable rank two
bundles on projective space split.  This approach leads to the study
of zero dimensional schemes.  We compare and contrast the punctual
Hilbert scheme to the moduli space of curves and point out some
interesting similarities and differences.
