Synopsis:

There have been some important recent advances in the period-index problem for the Brauer group of a variety. After reviewing the period-index problem, I will explain the argument in a very recent preprint by Huybrechts and Mattei that proves a finite period-index bound for unramified classes.  This gives a positive answer to a question motivated by recent work of Hotchkiss, de Jong, and Perry on a Hodge-theoretic approach to the period-index problem.
