Speaker: Sam Payne, Yale University

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314

Date: Tuesday, November 3, 2015, 3:30 p.m.

Synopsis:

I will begin with the motivation and statement of the main results from Brill-Noether theory for algebraic curves, explain the relationship to elementary chip-firing games on graphs, and outline the tropical proof of the Brill-Noether theorem, via chip-firing on a chain of loops.
