Synopsis:
Statistics of model geophysical and astrophysical fluids may be directly accessed by solving the equations of motion for the statistics themselves as proposed by Lorenz nearly 50 years ago. I introduce such Direct Statistical Simulation (DSS) by making a systematic expansion in equal-time cumulants of the dynamical fields of model systems. Live simulations will be performed to illustrate the approach. The two-layer primitive equations, including a comparison with statistics obtained from reanalysis of the mid-level atmosphere of the Earth, are studied. I conclude by discussing a possible extension of DSS to seamlessly capture multiscale physics.
