Student Probability Seminar
Correlation Estimates in Spin Systems
Speaker: Xingjian Di, NYU Courant
Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1314
Date: Monday, May 15, 2023, 6:40 p.m.
Synopsis:
Spin systems are interesting by themselves, and have a deep connection to many aspects of probability and mathematical physics. In this talk, I will give an elementary introduction to spin systems. Topics will include phase transition (Lee--Yang Theorem), Peierls argument and Mermin--Wagner Theorem. Time permitting, I will discuss some recent progress on the Manhattan pinball problem (based on joint work with Wei Wu). All the materials will be presented in a non-rigorous (aka physicist-friendly) way, and no prior knowledge is assumed.
