Nonlinear Kinetic Self-Organized Structures in High Energy Density Plasmas and Efficient and Accurate Plasma Simulation

Speaker: Bedros Afeyan, Polymath Research Inc.

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 905

Date: Friday, November 6, 2020, 11 a.m.

Synopsis:

We will describe nonlinear, kinetic, non-stationary self-organized structures in Vlasov plasmas which challenge traditional theories of wave-particle interactions. These are called KEEN waves for Kinetic Electrostatic Electron Nonlinear Waves. Their discovery and analysis has lead us to develop new numerical methods to tackle efficient simulations of multiscale dynamics in phase space and apply it for the efficient simulation of nonlinear kinetic plasma waves as a test case. The general method is called BARS, for Bidirectional Adaptive Refinement Scheme. A simplified bare bones version is called mini-BARS and it is easiest to implement. So much of what will be shown is within the context of mini-BARS.  Connections with machine learning and smart computing algorithms will be elucidated. Open math questions will be pointed out along the way.
