Mathematics Colloquium

Commuting Hamiltonians and Symplectic Topology

Speaker: Claude Viterbo

Location: Warren Weaver Hall 1302

Date: Monday, March 21, 2011, 3:45 p.m.

Synopsis:

We shall discuss the following question: given sequences of functions \(H_n,G_n\) on a symplectic manifold, converging for the \(C^0\) topology to \(H,G\) and such that their Poisson bracket tends to \(K\), in what sense do the Poisson brackets of \(F\) and \(G\) equal \(K\). We shall give examples, counter‐examples, and variations on this question.
