Math at Tandon
Brooklyn Math Tutoring Center
The Math Department offers drop-in tutoring in-person at the Math Tutoring Center (2MTC, room 829). Drop-in tutoring means that you may attend in-person without an appointment, at any time during the scheduled tutoring hours. Students will be assisted on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of one hour of tutoring per session. The Math Tutoring Center offers tutoring for all entry-level MA-UY courses. For course numbers above MA-UY 2314, please contact soe.math@nyu.edu to see if there is a tutor available for the course. We cannot guarantee tutoring for advanced or special topics courses.
Tutors are available to answer questions or get you started on a homework problem. Tutors can go over material you are not clear on, either from class or from the textbook. They can also show you a variety of problem solving methods. The Tutoring Center is meant to complement the learning that takes place in class, not substitute it. Tutors work with students to help them understand concepts and strengthen their problem-solving skills; they do not do homework problems for students or give complete students' work for them.
During peak exam times, such as midterms and finals, there may be multiple students seeking tutor assistance at the same time. Students who need additional assistance are encouraged to attend instructor or Course Director office hours, and can also reach out to The Math Department (soe.math@nyu.edu) to discuss other resources.
How to get the most out of a tutoring session:
- Start right away. Students who begin tutoring from the beginning of the semester typically do better than those who wait.
- Come prepared. Please bring your class notes and textbook. Look over the readings and try the problems. If you can, bring a list of specific questions. The more you prepare, the more you will get out of the session.
- If you miss a class, get notes from a classmate before your session. Tutoring is not a substitute for attending class.
